MOAR AMD, MOAR MOAR MOAR

I've been away from the internet since Friday afternoon, intentionally. No TV either, but at least I had LTE coverage for music streaming. Relaxing, but I didn't drink as much beer as I'd hoped. I also got sunburned as fuck, despite covering myself in SPF 30, not going into the water, and reapplying. Existence is pain.

Replaced my Minecraft Bedrock server with a Java edition server, because my son and I are now playing Java edition on our computers. His PC Is way overkill for Minecraft, as is mine ... he's got the ol' i7-4930k with 64GB of RAM, a 500GB SSD, and the RTX 2070. I originally thought I was going to chuck my ol' Thermaltake 750W power supply in there but it looks like the Corsair AX750 he had in there already had the correct power cables tucked away behind the motherboard tray.

I actually had him remove his old GPU and install the RTX 2070, which required moving the USB 3.0 card he had installed from the bottom-most PCIe x1 slot to the top one. His CPU's heatsink is somewhat large, so the GPU wouldn't fit in the top PCIe x16 slot. Luckily there's a second PCIe x16 slot that's full of pins -- the other two x16 slots are electrically x8.

I couldn't get Pop!_OS 22.04 to install on his PC for some reason. Never could figure it out. The iso sha256 sum checked out, and the image verified after being written to the USB stick, so ....... maybe the hardware doesn't like it? Not sure why that would be the case since it's an Intel x79 board with an i7-4930k. Ultimately I threw Linux Mint Debian Edition on there, updated to a more recent kernel (5.16.something as opposed to 5.10.something), and installed the nVidia proprietary driver. Minecraft and Powerwash Simulator run absolutely flawlessly on the box ... think I'm gonna share some games out of my Steam library so he can play those too.

LOL, I haven't even had time to sit down and rebuild the machine yet.   Between household repairs and chores, and then my nieces franken-puter giving me shit I barely have time to eat!

Plus i wanna create a video project in VEGAS and do a before encode so i can compare rendering time on the 9900k and the new 5950x.

So excited.... I've been out of the loop since 2019 thanks to the inbred bitch of Kentucky.   I feel like i have so much catching up to do in the tech world!

CPUs are exciting again. The 5950x is a monster, though it does pay for its high core count in the gaming department with a comparatively low clock speed. Absolutely beautiful way to give AM4/X570 a sendoff, though, given that X670 and AM5 are right around the corner.

I'd love for Blackmagic Design to release a version of DaVinci Resolve that works properly with the in-kernel AMD GPU drivers. As it stands it looks like I'll have to use Kdenlive (the official one, not the malware-infested clone) instead for the time being...

Got sunburned last weekend, so my skin's peeling ... and it's almost as satisfying as peeling the plastic off a sheet of tempered glass. Almost.

Currently killing my poor old RX 580 by re-encoding my 4K Harry Potter collection into 4K with only English audio and in a format my poor Plex server can handle.

Just came back up from the basement due to yet another round of tornado sirens. Took my laptop downstairs with me and had a shit-load of area radio feeds (regional police, O'Hare/Midway/DuPage County Airport towers) and weather radars up. Midway tower evacuated, that was fun to listen to.
