The all new minty fresh "What are you up to?" thread!

Been a busy week, mostly because of crippling panic attacks and zero sleep. I did just hit the buy button on an E3-1241v3 to replace the i5-4579S in our Unraid box. Now that the box is being more heavily tasked I wanted the hyperthreading and the extra 500mhz base clock speed doesn't hurt.

Also picked up a box lot of used Thermaltake Riing ARGB fans off the Facebook marketplace. 2x200mm and 5x140mm. I'm going to use them to replace the stock ARGB fans on my TT View S1 because they use a different ARGB standard thar my motherboard doesn't support.

So the NZXT Kraken G12 is a bracket that you can buy to toss an AIO on a GPU to watercool it. The problem is that NZXT never made an updated version, because every single AIO it's compatible with is past EOL, which means I'd have to buy it used. And I ain't buying watercooling tech used. I briefly talked to an NZXT rep though, and they alluded to a certain kind of AIO fitment "probably" still working, which led me to the Thermaltake TH120.

I'm still not entirely sure if it will work, but the Q&A indicates it should. So now I just need to save up my pennies and take the plunge.

Windows Server 2022 is janky as fuck ... RD Gateway functionality works, but if you install the Azure MFA plug-in for NPS, it crashes every time it serves a request. Yuck.

And here I am still running some Server 2012 R2 machines. Does Server 2016 have an Azure MFA plugin for NPS?

In other news, my car is currently down for anything but in town trips because it needs a drivers side front wheel bearing. Was supposed to show up on the 13th, but USPS still hasn’t gotten it here. doing both front ones at the same time ($30 each), they went from Chicago to New York to get to Minnesota……I’m now hoping it doesn’t rain a lot until I can get them in since I’m on motorcycle.

Yeah the Azure NPS plugin works on 2016+. Funny thing is that I've seen it working in our environment on 2022, but there are posts on Microsoft's forum where they encounter the exact same issue.

I may see about migrating to that once we fully move to Microsoft 365, right now we use Duo.  But our CRM solution integrates with Azure MFA and I'd prefer not to have two.....

I am also trying to figure out Ansible to update servers.

Duo is a much more mature product than Azure MFA. Cheaper to go with Azure MFA, sure, but Duo has a much better UX.

As for updating servers with Ansible, this is my "applyupdates.yml" file (I'm only running Debian/Ubuntu on my servers):
Code:
---
- hosts: all
  become: true
  become_method: sudo
  tasks:
    - name: Update apt repo and cache
      apt: update_cache=yes force_apt_get=yes cache_valid_time=3600

    - name: Upgrade all pacakges
      apt: upgrade=dist force_apt_get=yes

    - name: Check if a reboot is needed
      register: reboot_required_file
      stat: path=/var/run/reboot-required get_md5=no

    - name: Tell us if a reboot is needed
      debug:
msg: "System {{ inventory_hostname }} needs to be rebooted"
      when: reboot_required_file.stat.exists

I have a separate "reboot the server if it needs it" playbook too:
Code:
---
- hosts: all
  become: true
  become_method: sudo
  tasks:
    - name: Check if a reboot is needed
      register: reboot_required_file
      stat: path=/var/run/reboot-required get_md5=no

    - name: Reboot the box if kernel updated
      reboot:
msg: "Reboot initiated by Ansible for kernel updates"
        connect_timeout: 5
        reboot_timeout: 300
        pre_reboot_delay: 0
        post_reboot_delay: 30
        test_command: uptime
      when: reboot_required_file.stat.exists
