I may be able to upgrade the server ... would be nice to replace it with a faster (i.e. non-Westmere-EP) machine that uses less power. Processor TDP will be higher (2x L5640 = 120W, i9-7900X = 140W), but overall system should be slightly more efficient. Figuring the chipset draws less (X299 vs. 5520), the RAM draws less (4x DD4 SODIMM vs. 16x DDR3 DIMM), replacing the dual-port 10GbE NIC that I can't use anyway with a GeForce GT 730 (just need display output, don't judge), and using a single power supply ... right?

<edit> Oh yeah ... DDR4 SODIMMs. The motherboard is ITX Smile </edit>

Congrats dude Smile Welcome to married life ... not all that different from single life, apart from the whole responsibility thing.

My server upgrade is out the window. It looks like there's a problem with the CPU, since the behavior I experienced on the motherboard I was testing occurred on a different one as well. System wouldn't POST completely with any USB device other than keyboard/mouse attached, meaning loading an OS was right out. Couldn't navigate the BIOS without the system hanging 80% of the time, and the system would hang on the boot menu when I pressed F11 at POST and not show my attached USB device. Couldn't flash the BIOS from the internet (it's an Asrock board) or from USB. CPU temperature was fine -- didn't exceed 41°, as I was using my old 240mm AIO.

So ... looks like I'll be going from Westmere-EP to Ivy Bridge-EP instead. Primary driver for that decision was the RAM: I can use the existing ECC DDR3 modules from my current server in the Supermicro X9SRL-F I ordered. I can also use the Corsair RM850x I have in a box in the basement. Only thing is that I'll need to use a SAS HBA (can use SATA drives with it) for ZFS, as that doesn't like hardware RAID, so I'll use the tried & true LSI SAS9211-8i. I'll only be using 4 HDDs to start, and I'll have room for 4 more later on.

The PCI Express x16 slots in that motherboard are electrically x8, but that doesn't matter in the slightest because the cards I want to use -- the 9211-8i and two Silverstone ECM21s -- are x4. I don't know if the GT 730 I had lying around supports NVENC/NVDEC, so I'm probably not going to chuck that in there because the motherboard has built-in display output anyway.

Also -- that motherboard has the weird narrow ILM for the LGA 2011 socket. Luckily Noctua's NH-U12DX i4 supports the square (standard) and narrow ILM out of the box, so I'll just slap that on there with an additional fan for better performance. The motherboard has a shit-load of fan headers so I can stuff the case full of the 140mm Fractal Design fans I pulled from my Define 7, but I may use the 120mm PWM fans I have in there now.

I bought a Neoteck NTK021 digital dial indicator to help me level my 3D printer's bed, and I've tried to print this thing 3 times: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1818426

Tried twice in PETG (snapped both times) and once in TPU (sags in the middle when the dial is inserted). So now I'm printing it a fourth time in both PETG and TPU. The mounts are in TPU so it can flex and clip on to the steel rods; the rest is in PETG so it stays rigid when the dial is on it. The interface between the TPU and PETG parts of the model is a series of alternating layers: 0.4mm PETG, 0.4mm TPU, repeat until the top. Hope this is enough to keep it all together. I'm using gray PETG and TPU to print it so it'll look uniform. T minus 5 hours until it's done lolol

Dafuq, man ... this is one of the reasons I didn't reinstall Chrome Remote Desktop on my home PC. Yes, it's hella convenient and I have 2FA enabled, but I don't need randos to be able to get into my shit.

I'm trying to 3D print that dial mount again. The dual-material one I tried yesterday was a failure, most likely due to some janky retraction settings I put in there for the left nozzle. Now, I'm going to print it in three pieces: one PETG, and the other two TPU. The TPU pieces are separated because they have to "bridge" over the X axis belt.

In other news, I used XTC-3D on a print for the first time, and the model looks really good. It's a trophy that looks like a poop emoji, so I guess you really can polish a turd.

Built my eBay Special server Smile Now I'm trying to trick it into installing Proxmox VE. It doesn't like my 32GB Kingston USB stick, and it doesn't seem happy with the Proxmox 6.3 ISO mounted to virtual storage ... maybe it's because the SSD I'm trying to use already has something on it. Happy New Year, everyone Smile

I'm doing this:

rsync -avh --progress plex@10.0.0.43:/opt/plexremote/* /srv/plexmedia

...on the new server. RSYNC ALL THE THINGS AND THEN SHUT THE OLD THING DOWN

<edit> Also ... server's in the ol' Thermaltake Core V51 Riing Edition. No Riing fans in it, though ... mentioned earlier that I'd slap the 140mm fans that came with my Fractal Design Define 7 in, and I did exactly that. Also, Xeon E5-2690v2 + Noctua NH-U12DX i4 + additional Noctua NF-F12 fan = 33° C temp on the CPU. The motherboard doesn't have all that much in the way of fan throttling, but that's fine because it'll be in the basement (currently under my desk), and it's MUCH quieter than the 3U Supermicro chassis in the basement already. I've already got 6 VMs running on the thing (Bedrock server for Minecraft, two Pi-Hole instances, Plex, a Docker host, and a Gitlab server), and there are four 8TB disks in RAIDZ (hence the 9211-8i) so it's not like the thing's sitting here idle either. I'm not going to question my dubious decision to use a tempered glass side window on a server's case, especially when it's going to be in a dark basement.

My latest rsync has been going for 24 hours and it's still not done yet ... probably will finish sometime tomorrow. Then I can shut down the X8DTH-F and move the X9SRL-F downstairs to its permanent home.

I've got a nice monitoring dashboard for it too Smile Proxmox has a "Metric Server" setting, so I chucked a Graphite container onto my Docker VM and spun up Grafana next to it, so I can keep an eye on storage/network/memory/CPU utilization across all the things.

I intend to stick a cron job on the Plex VM to sync its contents with my Synology DS418, which is also running Plex as a backup. Maybe I can formalize that config by sticking haproxy in front of it with the VM as primary backend and the Synology as backup ... but that may be overdoing it a bit, and Tautulli (running under snapd on the Plex server itself) isn't smart enough to aggregate the info from both Plex instances ... and Varken is a pain in the dick to set up.

Right now I'm sitting in my son's room watching him do his remote learning over his shoulder. If I don't, he'll start playing browser-based games or goofing off with the toys in his room. I've had to tell him to focus a bunch of times, but he's been paying attention and answering questions when he's called on, so ... all good.

Our puppy (8 months old and 65 pounds) completed her training yesterday. She was an uncontrollable canine missile when we started, but now she's chill as fuck and quite obedient. She's also in my son's room, but she's curled up and sleeping on the rug.

<edit> Also, I finished the Guns, Love, and Tentacles DLC for BL3 last night. It was ... alright. It's another one of those creepy/Halloween themed DLCs, but with the wedding of Wainwright Jakobs and Hammerlock involved. Not a spoiler because it's written all over the DLC's information, obviously. The inkeep has a peculiar way of talking that improves the DLC somewhat, but overall it doesn't really bring all that much to the story. Then again, neither does Bounty of Blood, which I finished last week, but at least that one has a new vehicle in it. I'm digging Mayhem Mode, but I've only turned on Mayhem 2 at this point. I've hit the level cap with FL4K and am just obliterating everything that crosses my path, and the extra perks granted by Anointed weapons are nuts.

There we go. Plex server's done, rsync to Synology is done. I've set up a cron job on the Plex server to push new files from Plex to the Synology every half-hour. Tested it out at one-minute intervals and it worked, so I just changed it to every 30th minute (e.g. */30 * * * * rsync...).

For some reason, Proxmox was fucking with me by leaving the DHCP client daemon enabled, and that was fucking with my routing tables. The VMs were fine, but all 5 interfaces on the host (eno1, eno2, enp4s0f1, vmbr0, vmbr1) were pulling DHCP addresses. I have eno1 configured as static and the other 4 as manual, so the fact that they're all pulling DHCP anyway is kind of stupid. Disabled dhcpcd, removed all the bad routes, and now it's happy.

BL3's Mayhem 10 (or 11, I guess) is pretty fun. Not quite as ridiculous since they nerfed Amara, but the others have gotten buffed a bit so I guess it all balances out.

Right now I'm on the phone with Amazon trying to figure out where the refund I was promised is. They're saying it's processed, my accounts disagree.

edit:

In case more ridiculousness is required.

Hmm. At some point, Cockpit became available on ARM. Not sure when that happened, but now that I know it did, I've installed it on two Raspberry Pis. I'm also going to be slinging more Raspberry Pi machines all around the house for various tasks ... got two Zero Ws, a 3A+, a 3B+, and a 4B. One Zero is going to be a webcam once I finish printing this new enclosure; I need to solder a 40-pin header to the other, and I'll slap an E-Ink display on it. It'll be a weather station in my bedroom. The 3B+ is going to get a 2.8" TFT display, and will take over Pi-Hole duties from the LXC container that's currently doing it, while showing a nifty graphical display of all the bullshit it's blocking. The 3A+ is going to replace the 3B+ for vidya emulation duties. Not sure what I'm going to do with the 4B, though -- I wanted to use that as the webcam, but none of the USB ports on my PC put out enough juice to power it with the Pi camera attached (you need to use the USB C power port when you put the thing into gadget mode).
