My machine took a shit today after I had a brain fart and tried to plug in a PS/2 keyboard while it was powered on. Got caught in a boot loop... it would get to the POST screen, freeze, then power cycle itself and keep doing all of the above indefinitely. Had to clear CMOS to get 'er up and running again.

Due to the above I lost my overclock and now I've forgotten all the settings I had changed to get the 4.7ghz stable clock I had. Dammit.

I love my new Sandy Bridge setup but this motherboard sure has some personality issues with it's current BIOS.

Well, to get it out of the way right now, you do need to install Origin to download/install the demo. I didn't bother trying to add it to Steam, since it's just a demo and I don't care. It's got two sections, the Single Player and the Multi-Player. MP is locked off until Friday, unless you already own BF3, which is where I'm at. The two missions are the ones that have been shown in various videos; the initial "tutorial" on Earth and a later mission on Sur'kesh escorting a female Krogan.

For reference, I ran a DudeShep Soldier, for reasons I'll mention later.

Intro
The missions are pretty cool, the pre-game stuff being interesting as well. Heck, the main menu reminds me of ME1, with the shot of Earth and how the camera pans upward when you press the Any Key.

Anyway, as far as character selection, all the normal stuff is there, but apparently now the fact that people have died under Shepard's command actually are mentioned, and may indicate that Shepard has PTSD, or some kind of issue related to that.
Mission 1
The tutorial mission basically throws you right into it, though the trial that was talked about at the end of The Arrival DLC was not there, so it's possible that was removed from the demo or even cut from the game altogether. Shepard is a civilian at the beginning of the game though, so there is some backlash for what happened in ME2.

Anyway, Reapers attack and then you and Anderson party up to try and get to the Normandy ASAP. This gets you used to the movement controls, introduces you to the mechanics (a step up in my opinion) and shows off a couple of kinds of Husks while you progress. The visuals, heck even the sound are stunning. You look out a window and see a Reaper... and that it's taking up a good chunk of the horizon. They are loud, destructive, and will kill anything they feel like for whatever reason they want. The end of the mission has you getting picked up by the Normandy, and Anderson choosing to stay behind, ostensibly to help other people escape (a shitty proposition, based on what you see earlier). But I think it's a way to hint at the MP aspect without being too obvious.
Mission 2
This is the "escort mission" that basically has you going from checkpoint to checkpoint making sure a box with a female Krogan gets to it's destination. Unfortunately, this is also kind of a weak spot for the demo; I ran Soldier because no matter what class you choose, you get loaded down with four guns, and that matters for your power cooldowns. Soldier's "power" is guns, so that kind of offset it. The guns you get are a pistol, shotgun, SMG, and AR; yup, no sniper rifle, so Infiltrators are kind of screwed.

This is something specific to the demo though, so don't worry.

This gets you used to the "leveling" aspect in the game, since you're at 10 or so, and you have points that need distributing. It's way better in this game than it was in ME2, but it uses the same format. Like, each upgrade costs and additional # of points (level 1 is 1pt, level 2 is 2pts) but each level of each power has a specialization that you can opt for, kind of like how the class powers were in ME1. Also, cooldowns are different; ammo types, grenades, and Medigel/Unity don't count towards your power cooldown. The flipside is, your carry weight does. Any class can carry any gun (woo!) but the more/better guns you have, the longer your power cooldown is. So this encourages Vanguards to just carry a shotgun, or Infiltrators to carry a pistol and a sniper rifle, etc. But like I said before, the Soldier's power is guns, so they don't take nearly the hit that other classes do. That's why I chose it for the demo.

Anyway, on to the story. The second mission starts out with a conversation between Wrex, Liara, and Garrus, which is kind of awesome. Mostly because they barely said jackshit to one another in ME1 (elevators!) and this is the sort of thing I like. The mission itself has you party up with Garrus and Liara, fighting some Cerberus soldiers who actually use tactics against you (forcing you to do the same), culminating with a mini-boss fight at the end against an Atlas mech.
I enjoyed myself, and can't wait for the game. Hell, I can't wait for MP to unlock on Friday. It's gonna be awesome.

In other news the AMD Radeon 7770 and 7750 hit store shelves today... the 7770 pretty much keeps up with the Geforce GTX 560 Ti for $50 less.

And at $109 the 7750 isn't too shabby either, either would make a great HTPC card.

I'm playing around with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Core. I originally wanted to mess with Hyper-V Server, but I figured Core gives me more flexibility if I want to throw another role on there. The machines I'll be working with have dual hex-core Xeons and 96GB of RAM each, so I don't truly need Core, but I figure it's worth testing out. If you haven't tried it and want to, learn the commands ... but sconfig is nice too Smile

I took delivery of a pair of Netgear GS748TS switches. They're just 48-port "smart switches" ... but they're stackable. You stack them with HDMI cables. Yes, that's right: you stack Ethernet switches with multimedia cable. Win.

From what I've read, you do not want to put a roll other than Hyper-V on a server. Will cause major issues.

You can put AD on it as well ... I don't know if putting AD on a server with no traditional GUI is a bad thing, to be honest. I only log into our AD boxes to do updates -- everything else is done from RSAT on my workstation.

We use SCVMM extensively, so we don't even have to install Hyper-V manually on Core. Just run sconfig to assign a static IP, give it a name, join the domain, and apply updates, and then add it to SCVMM and let that enable Hyper-V and reboot. If I deploy a bare Core image via WDS I can be up and running in less than an hour. Wonderful.

In unrelated news I have about a week's worth of beard growth and just shaved my head. Julie reckons people wouldn't want to approach me in a dark alley ...

My computer finally got a COMPLETE and Thorough cleaning today. and All the case fans replaced. CPU Heatsink Cleaned and a fresh application of Arctic MX-2 applied.

Temps went down average of 20°C. I'm happy.

Think I'm going to start folding again, now that I have a decent GPU to fold with along with the Q9650, I'm thinking I could do that now while i'm at work. And If I do it for EVGA and average 150,000 points a month (~5,000PPD) I could get 5 EVGA bucks a month, and 350,000 (~11,700PPD) A Month i could get 10.

Mario just got his bath. Auto Show tomorrow ... but I don't think we'll be taking Mario with. We'll drop him off at my parents' house. Something about taking a baby who just recently got over an illness out in public that doesn't sound right.

At the moment I'm upgrading my video drivers. Not because I need to, of course, but because I'm sick and bloody tired of the "ZOMG CATALYST INSTALL MANAGER FOUND A NEW UPDATE" pop-up.

Just got home from the Chicago Auto Show. Didn't take too many pictures (I don't think there were more than 250), but I think they look better than last year's. No flash ... excellent Smile There were still some pictures that turned out bad, but not as many as last time. I can't help that pictures look like crap when I've got obnoxious jerks bumping into me.

Mildly disappointed by what the manufacturers brought out. Acura still had the current RDX on display, but had the new one (the pussified 3.5L V6 version) hidden in the back of their exhibit. Honda had a good 7 or 8 Civics but no Crosstour or Odyssey. Ford had a huge exhibit as always, with two different versions of the Fusion on display (the new one and the current one), but the new Escape was relegated to the side wall of their area. Lexus did the same thing with the freshly-redesigned GS -- they had one out on display and one "Fiveaxis" project version, but it wasn't up on a turntable. The Mazda RX-8 was conspicuously absent (bye-bye, rotary), as was the turbodiesel CX-5.

I did get to see a McLaren MP4-12C in person, and Lexus had 4 LFAs lined up (that's $1.5 million worth of car). Ford had a Mustang GT500 up on a dyno and would run it up to 4th gear every hour or so, and the noise was fantastic.

I get to go to the data center tomorrow morning. My maintenance window is 3:00-5:00AM, which means I'm waking up at 2:00. Best get to bed, then ... going to install HBAs into three of the servers and get them hooked up to the SAN. I'm also going to pop a WIC into one of the routers. That one's going to get an MPLS connection, but will be configured to fail over to Ethernet in the unlikely event that MPLS goes down. There's a second, identical router that becomes active if the primary one is down completely (HSRP for the win).

I don't really want a wireless keyboard & mouse, but I don't really do much gaming other than SWTOR anymore so it won't be a huge deal. I just wish I could get a bucking spring keyboard in an ergnonomic design.

Also, the more I type on my Transformer Keyboard the more I get used to it and the fewer mistakes I make. Although I make almost no mistakes using Swype Smile

I'm making a list of cars. All of them. My dad wants to buy a car and can't seem to get his wants and needs sorted out. For example, this morning he said he wanted a sedan and didn't want a sedan in the same sentence. Said he likes the Nissan Sentra because my sister likes hers, but doesn't want one for himself. No, that is not how it is done. Identify your price range, identify your needs, determine which manufacturer makes vehicles that match your price range and needs, and maybe throw in a couple of wants if you have some wiggle room. A Honda Element would have been perfect, but he didn't Cash For Clunkers his van and Honda discontinued the Element, and the closest thing to that now is the Scion xB, which lacks a lot of the Element's unique features.

Then he says the Element doesn't get the fuel economy he's looking for. Anything is better than that damn van with its 11MPG downhill with a stiff tailwind. But I'll be damned if the 20+ MPG vehicles I rattled off meet his needs...

I Heart the Element. I was really bummed that they discontinued it. I think you should be able to hose out the bottom of EVERY car like you can the Element. Fucking people and their obsession with putting carpet in houses / vehicles.

Does he not want to buy used? Buying a brand new car is stupid... I don't think I would ever EVER do it unless I was just rich or something. Better to buy slightly used and let all the stupid people have that 'I just drove my brand new car off the lot and it lost $5,000 value immediately' experience.

And even if he wants brand new I bet you could find a new Element on a lot somewhere. But he doesn't want the Element... lol

Get a Chevy Aveo or whatever, they get like 40mpg... Big Grin

Screw the Aveo. He'd only go for the Cruze if it had a turbo diesel, which may actually happen in the near future. I showed him the Subaru lineup and he seems to like the Impreza, which is surprising because I don't think he was considering Subaru as an option.
