So i'm running into an issue with write speeds. Read/Copy speeds seem to be fine, but when trying to write to a hdd it goes slower then my internet.

I know Nox played with FreeNAS for awhile, not sure if you could shed some light on this or not.

What's the file system? I don't know what file system its compatible with.

FreeNAS is compatible with just about every file system... but I can't think off the top of my head what would be causing slow writes other than the obvious (hardware settings, or a hardware problem) - but I haven't used FreeNAS in well over a year now. I've got an old Socket-A athlon system waiting on some hard drives for a FreeNAS box though...

well I know file indexing services can slow down performance, but never that much, they are intended to stop during heavy usage. but if he's using a file system not intended for large file xfers that could (rare) slow things down.

just throwing out ideas, how old is/are the drive(s)?

the drive in particular is barely a year old. When I had it my HTPC write speeds were normal. All 3 drives I have in it are NTFS as I had stuff on them already and no where to back the data to at this time.

Considering the NTFS Write support is still "experimental"(don't know why) or beta depending on what you use for driver.

I guess that would be a good guess as well. I imagine he compiled it in the kernel (don't think there is module support for NTFS write support), i'm not logged in to ubuntu or i would check for module support, but honestly it shouldn't matter either way.


also what kernel version are you running on your NAS boxen?

Tuxera NTFS: High-performance read/write commercial kernel driver, mainly targeted for embedded devices from Tuxera which also develops the open source NTFS-3G driver.

If you compile NTFS read as a module in Linux, the write support is a module too. Not sure about FreeBSD as thats what FreeNAS is based on.

I honestly have no idea which kernal it is, i can't find it listed anywhere. It's whatever was on the FreeNAS 8.2 iso I downloaded form their site. I think for now, until NTFS support is improved, i'm just gonna install win7 as I know that works.
