The Backlog: Sorce's Edition

Officially beat Borderlands, though I still have the last three DLC stories to go. Ended it with a Lvl. 39 Sniper, and unfortunately, the story's end is kind of weak.

I'm about to beat Borderlands. Just got to the Crimson Grounds or w/e. the one where you fight the guardians.

Finished out the Borderlands DLC for the most part. I suppose if I want to go for Max Level, I need to start up a second playthrough/NG+, but I'm totally not feeling it. Relatedly, I've started up Mass Effect again, this time with an Engineer. Engineer is going to be a straight play-through, no side-missions or romances though.

In "games I haven't actually played before" news, I also started up Far Cry. Graphics are slightly worse than I remember from the demo a few years ago. Could be the nostalgia (or whatever you'd call it), but it is what it is.

Dude, the freaking ending for Borderlands was weak as all hell. Annoyed me. Gunslinger-spec Hunter is the absolute worst for the final boss, though ... guess what I was playing.

Yeah, I can guess. I don't understand the point of the Gunslinger-spec though, from the game standpoint. It's the sniper class... why offer a focus on pistols? Through most of the game my non-sniper gun was a combat rifle, then post-game I mostly ran a shotgun. One-hit CQC kill while I was running to the next goal. Overleveling like a bauss.

I beat borderlands, working on my 2nd playthrough. Also beat Arkham Asylum the other night, just need to do the challenge mode to 100% the game.

I can see that. I went back to Fyrestone after I'd beaten the game and most of the DLC, and ran around with a 2-shot revolver. I never needed the second shot for anything. Most died in an explosion of red mist. I almost went after Skagzilla again, but decided against it and then uninstalled the game (keeping the savegames though).

Right now I'm stalled, game-wise. I can't muster up the desire for Mass Effect OR Far Cry.

I grabbed Hydrophobia: Prophecy on Steam (Mid-week sale puts it at $3) and started up a game on that. Controls are fine, though the character's movements are a bit jerky. Also her accent is kind of annoying to me right now. Gameplay is kind of like Mirror's Edge as far as the climbing is concerned, though there will be gunplay later, so intimates the loading screens.

Story is still in the beginning, so I'm still learning about everything. Seems cool though.

Beat Hydrophobia: Prophecy, it took about 5 hours from stem to stern. I didn't get all the little trophies and whatnot, but I defeated the main story. Not a bad deal for $3 or $4 bucks, but I don't think I'd have paid $12 for it.

Last boss battle was a PITA though.

Swapped back to Mass Effect, since Dragon Age's team AI was giving me fits. Engineer sucks though, seems like it'll be a good class once I'm leveled, but I have no interest in that this time around. This is my "let's do the minimum required to beat the games" run.

I didn't start any missions after getting to the Citadel the first time (aside from the Keeper scanning one), and immediately went to recruit Liara, since I wanted her character achievement. As of right now, I'm at ME's endgame, and aside from 5 side-missions (the ExoGeni data on Feros, talking to Wrex about his armor since I didn't recruit him, Rare Earth mineral collecting, talking to Nassana about her sister, and talking to Kahoku about his squad) I've done everything else.

Guess what I still don't have? WTF.

ME2 is turning into a bigger PITA than I thought. I'm rolling right through the game (Veteran difficulty ain't shit after Hardcore, apparently) but it looks like I have to recruit everyone just so the story points pop up. I was hoping to make this a "minimal" run, but that seems to be a pipe dream.

edit: For clarification, I found out that you only need 8 characters (out of 12 possible) to run the Suicide Mission. The first five were mandatory (Miranda, Jacob, Garrus, Mordin, and Jack), but the other 3 could be anyone else; apparently not. The other three have to be Tali, Samara, and Thane. The only optional characters, DLC aside, are Grunt and Legion; but you still have to run their "recruitment" missions since they pop story missions. This particular combination isn't bad per se, but if you want everyone to survive, you need to run every one's loyalty mission (save Samara and Thane). Oh, and this includes some pretty big Paragon/Renegade checks too.

That's a lot more involved than I thought previously. I was under the impression I could grab any 8 people (in this case, the first five, Legion, Zaeed, and Tali) run 5 specific loyalty missions minimizing the P/R conflicts, which would be perfect for my "I don't care" Engineer, and be done. Nope.

C'est la vie, I guess.

Just under half-way through ME2 in my Insanity Sentinel run, and I've decided that I don't like Sentinel much. Virtually all that class has are defense powers, with nothing really geared towards offense. Sure, the abilities do wipe away the enemy's defenses, or at least can stun them, but my outright "killing power" is diminished. Basically fights just take a really long time since I'm more defense oriented, and have to rely on my squad to actually do more of the killing. Thankfully I have Dominate as a bonus power.

Also, after this run I think I'm going to take a break from Mass Effect for a while. At that point I will have beaten both games 4 times (not including NG+ as separate) in the space of ~9 months so I think it's time to stop for a bit.

Bought Dead Space 2 on Origin because I liked the first one, and it was $9.99. I even installed it, so that when I'm done with my Insanity Sentinel run, I can jump right over. Plus, this will get me used to Origin by the time Mass Effect 3 comes out, since I have a feeling EA is going to be a bag of dicks about it.

I've got my desktop back up and running, and I'm neck deep in Dead Space 2.
I'm actually getting nervous. Up until this point, Issac has been in The Sprawl, a space station that is off Titan, one of Saturn's moons. Issac still has his PTSD episodes, and that's cool considering what he's been through, but then Visceral decides to drop the motherload on you. Apparently The Sprawl is the current home of the "vacant" USG Ishimura; this wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that Chapter 10 of the story consists of you going back into it. Sure, it's different, what with the heavy cordons and white sheets over everything, but holy crap am I checking every damn corner of every damn room I've been in.

Haven't done that since Resident Evil 2. I'm just waiting for something to jump out at me, all while Nicole is whispering in my ear.
They're both (so far) pretty fun. They suffer a bit from the "main character is the only one that can fix anything" trope, but looking past that, they're fairly enjoyable. They put an interesting twist on zombie killing as well, since in the DS franchise, headshots will not really put anything down. You need to cut off their arms or legs.

It seems as if the Steam Overlay doesn't work with the Tomb Raider games. This is fairly annoying, since I happen to use the screenshot and messaging functions quite often.

Especially annoying since at least at the beginning of TRL, there are some fantastic vistas.

DCU Online is fun, but apparently the Guild system is limited to the Legendary accounts. Anyone can join a guild (called "Leagues") in the game, but only Legendaries can actually make Leagues for people to join. You can only be a Legendary if you have a paid subscription.

Thankfully I haven't gone up against anything that requires a League yet.

As a result of the (still ongoing) Steam Sale, these games have been added to the backlog:

Alice: Madness Returns
Batman: Arkham City
Blur (gifted to me)
Duke Nukem Forever
Portal 2 (gifted to me)

There will probably be more damage in the days to come, but I at least wanted to update now.

Beat Portal 2, and it was fabulous. The "journey into the past" was great, plus all the new mechanics the game (or GLaDOS, depending on POV) introduced were fun. The puzzles were actually harder this time around, and some of the solutions were, at least for me, outside of the box. The ending was awesome too. If there was one thing negative I could say, is that the loading screens/transitions weren't as fluid in this iteration as they were in the last one. But that's a small thing compared to the rest of the game's "good".

I'm a good way though Duke Nukem Forever, and I gotta say, it's pretty underwhelming. I mean, I knew it wasn't going to be great just because of the development time, but dang. The humor is still there (Though for some reason I wished they'd just go full frontal. It's odd.), but the levels just seem to run a little too long, and the way they're broken up is annoying as hell. The driving mechanic is shitty too. At least I only paid $5 for it; it's probably worth that.. maybe $10, but I'd have to beat the game first to make that call.

Man, at least someone's making progress through their backlog... my backlog is so huge it's got ten years worth of games on it. And you know what's funny? I keep finding myself hankering for the golden age - I've given serious thought to digging out the ol' SNES and replaying Super Mario World and A Link To The Past...

And yes, I actually DO have an SNES in the closet.

I also have 2 Sega Genesiseses....(es?), no less than 3 gamecubes, a PSX, and I think an N64 though it's missing the RF/Video dongle.

I probably wouldn't actually dig the SNES out though, It'd be easier to setup ZSNES and go all hi def in this bizzatch...

#79
"making progress through their backlog" HA! Mostly right now I'm just playing the games I just bought in Steam's Holiday Sale. Big Grin

Might want to make a list either here, a text document, or on that Backloggery site; then at least you can get a handle on what "has to" be done. Plus, I don't always count beating a game when I take it off the list. For example, the Battlestations games: I played them for about half and hour each and that was it. Barely made it past the first mission, but since those are very much outside my wheelhouse, I decided to move on to something else. Or say Infernal, which I couldn't even get to run; that's off as well.

I want the SNES then. :p I love Super Mario World.

Been playing Rage which I got for Free through Bethesda as well as Brink which I haven't been playing.

Need to play Evil Genius, Payday: The Heist which was free though steam as a gift from Steam. and Portal 2, which I bought on sale but haven't been able to play.

Edit:
Just got Skyrim for free from Bethesda. lol I love the Bethesda insiders.
