My Dad's computer

#1
So I'm building him one instead of him going to best buy or some box company like that.

I got 2 builds, one amd, one intel.

He's not gaming, so it doesn't need a high powered Videocard.

sooo, here are the links.

AMD

and

Intel

If you want you can "rip" em apart, but overall I'm pretty happy, and it is kinda overkill for a Email and web-browsing machine. Wink

for informational purposes.

I think you'll like those.

I have to agree with mr. nox on this one. And referring to the AMD build wishlist, any reason for going IDE on the DVD burner? SATA version is the same price. though it lacks lightscribe.

Yeah avoid IDE devices now at all costs, unless there is some really specific reason you need it.

The time of having long flat air-blocking ribbon cables in your case has long since passed...

my vote is for the AMD system, but thats prolly because my Phenom II x2 system rips it up in WoW (i was getting 60fps in a raid and installing Visual Studio 2008 at the same time last night).

I happen to be building my dad a system too. I am using the i5 750

You might consider that for a few bucks it blows the doors off any dual or quad.

Maybe not "blows the doors off" but benches higher. haha

As far as the video card, I'd suggest an nVidia 8400GS (PCI flavor). It's cheaper than the one in the list currently and will still do everything your dad will want it to do.

does using an ide dvd-rom drive in your home server count as a really specific reason to need it (i.e. to cheap to buy a new one for a computer that hardly ever needs it)?

or what about using a 120gb ide hd for Windows Server Update Services in the same machine since it still works?

I've quoted a i5 system already.

Well, I just built a system for my dad. It was a:

Core 2 quad Q8400
Gigabyte EP45-UD3L
4GB Gskill PC-8500 RAM
320GB WD Black HD

Turned out pretty good. He likes it and it will do all he needs or wants.

Mushkin 1600Mhz RAM 4GB (7-8-7-20)
