Back to School computer build.

#1
I figured this was the best place to put this particular thread.

Here's the skinny: I'm going back to school, and I'm also studying for my CCNA cert (pursuing my CCNP and then the CCIE). The PC I'm going to need to help with that needs to be able to virtualize network layouts and currently, the software that runs the virtual networking program absolutely destroys my existing PC. Damn you Cisco!!!

Also, with me going back to school, it's been placed to me that I should probably update my computer to survive the coming school years and the abuse that late night homework sessions will be placing on the machine.

With that in mind, I'm able to get a student loan (and possibly a scholarship or two) to build this thing, but I wanted to get some input as per the design I'm throwing together. As you're all looking at what most would consider to be an 'overkill' computer, I build every 4 years with minimal (if any) upgrades in between.

Desktop PC:

Processor: Intel Core i7 975 Extreme Edition $545

RAM: Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600 12GB $269

Motherboard: eVGA E758-A1 3-Way SLI Intel X58 $289

Video: BFG GTX295 1792MB $549

Power Supply: Antec TruePower Quattro Q-1000 $185

Primary HDD: 2x Western Digital Velociraptor 150GB 10K RPM in RAID-0 $359

Storage HDD: 2x Seagate 7200.12 Series 1TB HDD $179

Optical Drive: Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7240S-0B $29

CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS 9700NT $59

Case: Antec 1200 Server Chassis $169

Total with extras including cables, thermal grease, cathode lights, fans, new monitors, etc comes to around $3300

Also, any suggestions on a decent laptop under $1000?

I was looking at THIS to take to classes and to run simulations for network architecture on, but I'm open to suggestion.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!!!1

I love Toshiba Laptops, I don't honestly think anyone builds a better laptop for the price. IMHO. They are a great quality, and I have owned 2 so far. And my next laptop will be a toshiba.

And instead of BFG, I'd go with EVGA for the video card. Might as well stay in the same family, and the step-up is a nice feature if something comes along better.

Laptop Linkage.

I originally had the equivilant eVGA card picked out, and then newegg decided to stop carrying it. those bastards!

And I'll give the Toshiba's a look over, the only reason I didn't jump to Toshiba as a starting point is I've had to deal with their warranty support people. One word: Slow.

The last lappy I sent out for repair got back to me the same week. The HD was dying, I sent it out, I got it back with a larger HD.
